Follow Directions

by kimanncurtin on May 19, 2010

Common sense – well it’s just not common.

Now I know some of you know me for not following directions and there is a time and a place for that – one of my earlier postings even advocates intentionally breaking rules. When there is a specific intention intended.

But I would suggest that 9 times out of 10 if your integrity isn’t at stake or you’re not being asked to continue to be a door mat or the love of your life isn’t pulling out of the station when you realize that you do love them…then it’s usually better to just follow the damn directions.

They are there for a reason.  I would think that this would just be a given but I keep finding it isn’t. When directions have been given: how to respond to job posting or how to get from point A to point B or perhaps not give advice to someone who asked that you just listen.  Pay attention to what people say or write.

When someone asks you to do something in a particular way there is usually a reason. Maybe you will find out later or never find out. When you don’t follow the directions – you appear to be someone who doesn’t listen or read well. Or worse – that you just don’t care.

Consider that your one reply or response will be the first and possibly the last impression you ever get to make.

Ask yourself is not being able to follow basic directions the lingering memory you want to leave in your wake?
